International Women's Day Special: Interview with Gemma

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

What is your name?

I am Gemma Nevers

What do you do for a living?

Manage an international business specialising in professional photography and videography for B2B marketing, sales, & internal comms.

Do you do other things outside your work? Side hustle? Community commitment? Please list them.

1. Supporting solo marketers to understand their ideal clients and why they buy their product/service fuelled by consumer psychology. 2. Public speaking coach for young people 3. Enterprise Advisor for the London Mayor program giving careers and business advice in a school which includes directly working with students. 4. Volunteer for homeless initiatives sharing food, drinks, and humanity. 5. Toastmaster (practice public speaking) 6. A bookworm, yogini enthusiast, and soon-to-be split sensation.

Describe a typical day in your life

  • No phone zone, cardio/yoga, and splits training in the morning.

  • Make sure I eat breakfast.

  • Write/review my plan for the day and start to execute.

  • Reading before bed instead of being on my phone.

Are you married?

No

Do you have kids? If yes, how many?

None but a fortunate Aunty to 9.

How do you manage your day-to-day activities considering all your commitments?

Having a weekly plan which I reduce to bite-size chunks daily. Write things down!

How did you get to the position of work you are in? Please provide practical steps you took to get to where you are now.

1. Being open to opportunities and not putting myself in a box or becoming attached to titles.

2. Sending in a prospective application

3. Once hired show up being reliable, consistent, delivering results, and being a kind colleague. This resulted in being selected for promotion twice within 3 years.

Were there any challenges or blockers on your way to becoming who you are now? If yes, what are those challenges?

Not enough experience and self-doubt.

How did you overcome these challenges/blockers if any? Please share the practical steps you took.

  • Found the gaps in my knowledge

  • Reminded myself of what I achieved in the past

  • Offer myself grace and journaling

Who is your role model and why?

I am an Aunty to 9 fantastic children and they remind me to have fun in the now, stay curious by asking questions, and be creative.

Do you have a mentor or a coach? If yes, which one? if not, why not?

Yes, Mary Fashanu and Roman Grigoriev.

If you are married with/without children, how do you balance/align your home commitments with your career/side hustle workload?

Time management and prioritisation. As time is our most valuable asset and I highly regard the relationships I do have, I make sure I find the time for the people and things that feed my soul. Work alone cannot meet all of my needs and wants.

What one piece of advice would you give to other women about them stepping into their power and purpose unapologetically?

  • Don't disempower and count yourself out.

  • Learn to love yourself where you are now and know through consistent focus you can evolve into who you want to become.

Thank you so much for your time, Gemma. We celebrate you today and always.

Happy International Women's Day! #iwd2023 #iwd
