Practical Strategies For Career Progression



Last week, we had the honour of hosting one of our phenomenal members to speak to our followers about practical steps to starting on the journey of career progression.


Here are a few tips that were shared:


Set Clear Career Goals:

What are your long-term career goals? Define your long-term career goals and break them down into smaller, achievable milestones. Having a clear direction will help you stay focused and motivated.


Carry Out a Skill Gap Analysis:

Identify the gap between where you are in your career now and where you need to be (career goals). How are you going to close that gap? What do you need to do to move closer to your career goal daily? Whom do you need to help you get there? What will be your ETA – estimated time of achievement?


Continuous Learning:

Commit to lifelong learning and professional development. Stay updated on industry trends, acquire new skills, and seek out opportunities for training and certifications. This will enhance your expertise and make you more valuable to employers.


Seek Feedback:

Actively seek feedback from your supervisors, colleagues, and mentors. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and provide insights into how you can grow in your role.


Build a Professional Network:

Networking is crucial for career advancement. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and connect with colleagues and industry leaders on platforms like LinkedIn. Building relationships can lead to new opportunities, mentorship, and valuable connections. Make sure you network with purpose. Be strategic. You do not need to attend all the events. Choose the events that are relevant to your overall career goals.


Take on New Challenges:

Volunteer for projects or assignments that push you out of your comfort zone. Embracing new challenges demonstrates your willingness to learn and grow, and it can lead to new opportunities and increased responsibilities.


Develop Leadership Skills:

Even if you're not in a formal leadership role, developing leadership skills is important for career progression. Take on initiatives, mentor junior colleagues, and demonstrate your ability to take charge and make decisions.


Expand Your Responsibilities:

Look for ways to take on additional responsibilities within your current role. Seek opportunities to lead projects, collaborate with different teams, or take on cross-functional tasks. This shows initiative and can position you for advancement.


Cultivate a Strong Work Ethic:

Consistently deliver high-quality work, meet deadlines, and go above and beyond what is expected. A strong work ethic will set you apart and build a reputation for reliability and excellence.


Build a Personal Brand:

Establishing a strong personal brand can help you stand out in your field. Be intentional about how you present yourself online and offline, share your knowledge through writing or speaking engagements, and position yourself as an expert in your area of expertise.


Remember, career progression takes time and effort. Stay persistent, embrace challenges, and adapt to industry changes. You can achieve your career goals with the right mindset and a proactive approach.
